Use of Play, Do and Go


We use the verbs play, do and go with sports and activities. Below are some rules you need to know to use each one of them correctly.

* Play:

Play is used usually with ball sports or competitive games where we play against another person:

1- How often do you play tennis?
--> Tennis is a ball sport.

2- We play poker on Saturday night.
--> Poker is a competitive game. We play to win.

3- I don't like playing computer games.
--> Computer games are competitive.

 

* Do:

Do is often used with a recreational activity or a non-team sport which does not use a ball:

1- I heard that you do karate.'
--> Karate is a non-team activity.

2. I do crossword puzzles in my free time.
--> Crossword puzzles are not competitive.



* Go:

Go is always used with activities that end in -ing. We go somewhere to do something:

1- I go fishing on Sundays.
2- Are you going skiing this winter?  
3- They said that they were going swimming.
